NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Metro leaders are still working on their goal of zero fatalities on Nashville roads. One of the ways to accomplish this goal is by putting sensors on the roads to help detect a range of safety issues.

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Metro Nashville Police Department said 21-year-old Koriona Harding was walking down a turn lane in the 4100 block of Murfreesboro Pike after her car broke down nearby. A vehicle driving along Murfreesboro Pike stopped abruptly to avoid crashing into the Smyrna woman, but the car behind it reportedly swerved into the center lane so it wouldn’t collide with the first vehicle and ended up hitting Harding.

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology can help prevent incidents like this. LiDAR devices can help Nashville officials identify dangerous areas like the one where Tuesday night’s crash happened, show how often cars nearly miss pedestrians, and offer other insights.

“Through phase one of our SMART Grant funded work, we were able to identify safety issues on a corridor that runs right in front of this building, Clarksville Pike,” the director of the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure, Diana Alarcon, said上海后花园论坛. “But we didn’t wait for a police report to show us where people were being struck上海新茶工作室联系方式. A SMART Grant supported the installation of LiDAR technology along Clarksville Pike and 26th Avenue, next to the North Nashville Transit Center. This has already introduced data to help with safety efforts.上海龙凤419

“We’ve seen a 30% decrease in high-speed driving in the test areas, as well as a dramatic decrease in dangerous pedestrian crossing, so you guys have already seen results, and I look forward to seeing all the results that come as it scales up,” said Dr. Robert Hampshire with the U.S. Department of Transportation.
